The relative importance of immediate allelopathy and allelopathic legacy in invasive plant species

چکیده

Some introduced invasive species may be competitively superior to natives because they release allelochemicals, which egatively affect native species. Allelochemicals can be immediately effective after being released but can also persist in soils, esulting in a legacy effect. However, to our knowledge there are no studies which distinguish between allelopathic legacy and mmediate allelopathy of invasive species and also test for their relative importance and possible interdependence. We used eleven invasive species and tested whether they show immediate allelopathy and allelopathic legacy effects in a actorial pairwise competition experiment using field-collected soil (invaded/non-invaded) and activated carbon to neutralize llelochemicals. We grew two native and the invasive species in both monocultures and pairwise mixtures. In monocultures, the native species did not experience an allelopathic legacy effect of the invasives, suggesting that invaders enerally lack persistent allelochemicals. However, the effects of invader allelochemicals were modulated by competitive nteractions. In competition, immediate allelopathy decreased competitive ability of natives, while allelopathic legacy positively ffected the natives. Moreover, immediate allelopathic and allelopathic legacy effects were strongly negatively correlated. Our results suggest that both immediately released allelochemicals and the allelochemical legacy of invasive species are mportant for plant performance under natural conditions, and that natives should be able to recover once the invaders are emoved. To test whether immediate allelopathy is responsible for plant invasion success, further studies should compare llelopathic effects between invasive and closely related native species.

Allelopathic Effects of Goldenrod Species on Turnover in Successional Communities

—While goldenrod species are often found to be allelopathic in laboratory settings, its importance in controlling plant community dynamics has been much more difficult to assess. We designed a study to determine whether allelopathy is related to the success of goldenrods in abandoned agricultural land. To accomplish this, we conducted laboratory bioassays for six co-occurring goldenrod species ...

Exploring the mechanisms of allelopathic interaction in the invasive annual plant, Phyllanthus urinaria

The belowground mechanisms facilitating invasion and proliferation of non-native plant species into natural communities are of critical importance for understanding plant invasions. Research on allelopathy suggests that some exotic plant species produce compounds via root exudates that may suppress or inhibit the growth of neighboring plants, but the specific mechanisms and consequences of thes...

Neighbourhood analyses of the allelopathic effects of the invasive tree Ailanthus altissima in temperate forests

1. Allelopathic interactions between invasive and native species have been suggested to be an important mechanism for the success of some of the most aggressive plant invaders. However, field experiments that test the effects of natural levels of allelopathic compounds on coexisting native species are exceptionally rare. 2. In this study, we analyzed the allelopathic effects of the invasive tre...

Soil Biota Reduce Allelopathic Effects of the Invasive Eupatorium adenophorum

Allelopathy has been hypothesized to play a role in exotic plant invasions, and study of this process can improve our understanding of how direct and indirect plant interactions influence plant community organization and ecosystem functioning. However, allelopathic effects can be highly conditional. For example allelopathic effects demonstrated in vivo can be difficult to demonstrate in field s...

Separation of Allelopathy from Resource Competition Using Rice/Barnyardgrass Mixed-Cultures

Plant-plant interference is the combined effect of allelopathy, resource competition, and many other factors. Separating allelopathy from resource competition is almost impossible in natural systems but it is important to evaluate the relative contribution of each of the two mechanisms on plant interference. Research on allelopathy in natural and cultivated plant communities has been hindered i...
